What do Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) Institutions Require for Admission?

The Tennessee Board of Regents institutions include: Austin Peay State University, Middle Tennessee State University, Tennessee Technological University, Chattanooga State Technical Community College, Columbia State Community College, Jackson State Community College, East Tennessee State University, Tennessee State University, The University of Memphis, Cleveland State Community College, Dyersburg State Community College, Motlow State Community College, Nashville State Technical Community College, Pellissippi State Technical Community College, Southwest Tennessee Community College, Walters State Community College, Northeast State Technical Community College, Roane State Community College and Volunteer State Community College.

The Tennessee Board of Regents uses the following admission requirements for applicants who are applying as first-time freshmen:

· High School Graduation - Applicants for degree admission as first-time freshmen must provide an official transcript showing graduation from high school.

· Standardized Examination Scores - Applicants for admission as first-time freshmen who are 20 years of age or younger must present Enhanced ACT or SAT scores. Universities will use the scores for admission, advisement and as a component in the placement decision. Community colleges and technical institutes will not use the scores for admission purposes but may use them for advisement purposes as well as a component in the placement decision.

· High School Course Requirements - To be eligible for degree admission as first-time freshmen at TBR universities, applicants will have successfully completed the following 14 minimum units of high school courses:

English, 4 units

Algebra I and Algebra II, 1 unit of each

Geometry or other advanced mathematics course with Geometry component, 1 unit

Natural/Physical Sciences, 2 units; 1 unit must be in a laboratory course in biology, chemistry or physics

U.S. History, 1 unit

Social Studies, 1 unit

Foreign Language, 2 units in same language

Visual/Performing Arts, 1 unit

What does the University of Tennessee (UT) at Knoxville require for admission?

Each fall, UT admits a freshman class of 19,000 students. Freshman admission decisions are based on the following elements:

· High School Course Requirements - Completion of core academic subjects comprising the 14 units required for college admission:

4 units of English

2 units of algebra

1 unit of geometry, trigonometry, advanced math or calculus

2 units of natural science, including at least 1 unit of biology, chemistry or physics

1 unit of American history

1 unit of European history, world history or world geography

2 units of a single foreign language

1 unit of visual or performing arts

· Grade Point Averages (GPA) - GPA in these core academic subjects are weighted by UT to reflect Honors and dual-enrollment courses (.05 quality points added), and AP and International Baccalaureate courses (1.0 quality points added). UT will use unweighted high school course grades as the basis for the core GPA calculation.

· Standardized Test Scores - The University of Tennessee will accept either ACT or SAT scores.

· Other relevant factors - These include the student statement, extracurricular or leadership activities, background and rank in class (if available).
